I should have listened to this

After deserting Indira, Devaraj Urs lost the Chief Minister's post after the 1980 Lok Sabha elections. All those leaders, whom he had supported, had joined hands with R Gundu Rao. His detractors did not even allow him to continue as Opposition leader for long. At the same time he was suffering from Herpes. He had lost lot of weight. He had become lonely in Politics. One day he landed at Bengaluru airport from Delhi. I was waiting at the lounge to go to Delhi.

I greeted him with folded hands. He reciprocated and as he was passing with his followers, I overheard him saying, 'I would not have been in this position if I had listened to this boy then'.

Urs deserted Indira Gandhi when the Janata Party Government sought to target her after coming to power. At that time, I had told Urs not to desert Indira during her bad times. "She has brought you up in Politics. She has made you the Chief Minister. It is not right on your part to desert her when she is in trouble. Even God will not endorse your act," I had told. He perhaps, recalled this at the airport.
