After I served in Finance Portfolio for six years and two months, Rajiv Gandhi made me Minister of Rural Development. Very next day, we were flying to Hyderabad in a special flight. "Why did you change my Portfolio? Did I do something wrong? You should not have changed my Portfolio," I told Rajiv.

He got very angry. He stood up and shouted at me. "What are you talking Poojary ji?" I had never seen Rajiv getting so angry till that time. He was a very mild mannered gentleman. "Do you know why I changed your Portfolio? Rural Development was Gandhiji's dream. I am mulling a big Constitutional amendment with regard to administration of Rural Bodies. Rural Development is not happening as we are expecting it to be. Though we have been conducting rallies and conventions about the same, no desired result has come about so far. I have seen how religiously you conducted Loan Melas. I want you to hold conventions for Rural Development with an equal zeal. This is the reason why I have changed your Portfolio," he said.

There are many opportunities and avenues to choose in life but you cannot choose happiness directly. It is only when you choose the path of hard work and commitment, you have happiness all over.

Then I realized about Rajiv's plans. Central Government was giving lots of funds to the State Governments for Rural Development. But bulk of it was not reaching the people or utilized for the purpose it was released. Rajiv wanted to create awareness among people by organizing Conventions all across the country on the lines of Loan Melas and he had chosen me for the job. "Please forgive me. I was under some other impression about my change of Portfolio" I told Rajiv.
