P V Narasimha Rao became Prime Minister. He was a great scholar. It is possible that Rao may have thought 'Poojary is a trustworthy man. He may have opposed my candidature because of his close association with Gandhi family. But, he will not betray me and can be trusted upon". Thus, despite my opposition in the CWC meeting, Rao gave me more responsibility than I ever had. He gave the most important party positions to me. He believed me completely. He used to consult me on each and every matter. I became very influential in the Party during his tenure. Sometimes, he used to wake me up at 5 a.m. and seek advice on the issues.

When Rajiv was PM, he used to make me sit on his right side in AICC Plenary Sessions. Now Rao made me sit to his left. The whole world was witness to this. Ambassadors of many Countries also participate in such sessions. Rajiv and PV N Rao used to give them names of members who should be allowed to speak. I used to write down names in chits and both used to follow my suggestions.

Even in the meetings of Congress Working Committee, Parliamentary Board and AICC meetings, I used to sit next to Rao. I was AICC General Secretary then and in-charge of Parliamentary Board also.
