Social reforms through Gokarnanatha Temple

Billawa community did not have a family Diety. The Upper castes had kept us Billawa's away from temples. We were not allowed to see Gods. It was Brahmashri Narayana Guru who gave us a family diety by building Gokarnanatha Temple in Kudroli in Mangaluru.

The place where the temple is built was chosen by Narayana Guru himself. Sometime in 1907, leaders of Billava Community Sahukar Koragappa, Vasu Mestri, ancestors of Anand Guttedar, Keshav Mijar and others met Brahmashri Narayana Guru and expressed their need to have a Diety for the Community. "Our Community is considered as untouchable. We don't have our own God. People do not think that we too are God's children."

Then Narayana Guru told them to build a Temple for the Community. "You identify a land. I will come there," he promised. Later the land was finalized and Narayana Guru laid the foundation in 1908. In 1912, a small Temple along with a beautiful pond was built. The inauguration was also done by Narayana Guru.
